Guide to Measurements: Hips

November 23, 2013

Normally, your hip measurement is taken at the widest part of your glutus maximus (butt), this is a crucial measurement for pants. In most cases, the same measurement is required for jackets. Always ensure that you’re standing up straight while someone else is taking the measurement, the measuring tape should be parallel to the floor.

In some cases, the “hip” measurement may require that you measure at the bottom of the jacket as in where the jacket hits your hips. This measurement is used especially when the jacket is shorter in length, it may not be as long as the widest part of your butt. The measurement should be done perpendicular to the base of the thumb or end of the thumb, depending on where your jacket length ended.

To measure hips on an existing jacket, simply measure the bottom of the jacket and double it.

This year marks the 10th year of the start of Movember which originated out of Melbourne, Australia over a bar discussion on men’s fashion trends (of all things!) What started off with 30 mo bros in Melbourne doing it for fun, has now spread all over the world to a whopping 1,127,152 people in 2012. Moustaches are grown for the entire month of November in support of men’s health charities like prostate cancer and depression.  Of course, there are mo’ sistas as well, that participate in their own way. Movember has gone viral due mostly to the sheer humor of it all. This guy is definitely having fun with Movember as he painstakingly compares his moustache to known celebrities.

Canada has been one of the leading countries earning the most money for charity for Movember over the past few years. It helps that the…

Along with checks, and plaids, we’ve also seen an increase in windowpane as another popular pattern on jackets. It’s a very simple pattern made up of large, same sized checks in a dark shade. This pattern can get away with being on a loud color like yellow or pink. Windowpane jackets have a vintage and casual feel, especially in a thicker wool material.

Today on the guide to measurements, we explore sleeve length, a fairly straight forward measurement. Again, this measurement is best done with the help of a friend and while you’re standing normally, with your arms to your side. It’s done even better while wearing a collared shirt.

Sleeve length for shirts and jackets differ slightly. The sartorial rule for collared shirts is that they show 1/4 of an inch under a jacket. So, for a jacket that has a sleeve length of 25 inches, the shirt length should be 25.25 inches. However, for those that are against any rules, you can always follow your own. Perhaps you don’t wear a jacket with a collared shirt, then you may want to subtract an inch from the measurement so that your watch or bracelets don’t get caught under the cuff. This also works for those that want to hide cuffs completely…

Trend Tuesdays: Denim Shirt

November 15, 2013

Whether you consider your style preppy, hipster, grunge or none of the above, a denim shirt suits just about anyone’s style. A typical denim shirt has 2 front flap pockets, a button down collar and and is made in any color of denim. It’s very much the epitome of a casual shirt for guys. It’s usually shown with rolled up sleeves to depict its history of utilitarianism. The trend these days, juxtaposes the “hard working” denim shirt with the sartorial formality of a bow tie and sometimes, cotton or knit tie.

Jeans of any color or khakis with a statement belt suit this look quite well. The denim shirt is versatile as it can be worn tucked in or out, rolled up sleeves or not, and an open collar or buttoned up. It’s a great shirt to experiment with since denim matches anything.

In the guide so far, we had a brief introduction to measurements and a how to on chest measurements. This week, we are exploring jacket length.

When measuring jacket length, ensure you’re standing as you normally would with your eyes facing forward. Do not bend, as this will affect the measurement. You will need someone else to help you obtain this measurement.

Jacket length is a fairly straight forward measurement which varies in two ways. There is the standard/traditional length or a trendy/shorter length, both are based on personal preference. As shown in the video, a traditional jacket is measured to the end of the thumb and a trendier jacket is measured at the base of the thumb. The difference may be minimal, but keep in mind that even one inch taken away will make a dramatic difference.

If you have a heavier or bulkier upper body, then opt…

This week on Guide to Measurements, we explore two quite different yet sometimes conflicting measurements: “stomach” and “waist”.

The stomach measurement is taken at your belly button which is important for jackets, while the waist measurement is taken where you normally wear your pants, this can vary among individuals, but it’s generally 3 inches below your belly button.

Here is the waist video:

When you check your waist measurement, did you notice that its slightly different than your ready to wear pant size? Don’t worry, this is quite normal. As mentioned in the introduction to this guide, all brands differ in what they think a size “30” is. Brands usually add in a “vanity” cushion of 1.5 to 4 inches. You should expect atleast 1.5 inches more from your actual size at the very least, when buying pants. Of course, this is why belts exist!

Here is the stomach…

Made popular by the likes of John Lennon, Gandhi and most recently Harry Potter, these rounded eyeglasses are lately popping up everywhere and as sunglasses as well. These are characterized by the lack of nose pads which were invented post 1920’s and the circular eye pieces. These peculiar eye glasses have a highly hippie and spiritual vibe associated with them so it would appeal more to the creative minded individual who is not afraid to try out new styles. But of course, there is a catch, not everyone can pull of such bold glasses. You’ll have to try them on see for yourself!

We start our journey of learning about measurements with the chest measurement. Chest is a fairly straight forward measurement, although there are a few ways to get it wrong. Here are some tips and a video on how to measure your chest.

  • Do not puff out your chest.
  • Stand normally, with your arms to your side.
  • Ensure the tape measure goes around your nipples, as this is the widest part of your chest.
  • Wear a shirt, not a blazer when measuring your chest.

Off the rack jacket sizes range from 36 to 46 chest on average. This is the American way of looking at sizing; it differs wildly across the world. Knowing your actual chest size is the best way to go about knowing your off the rack size. The tricky part is, your size will vary across brands because brands add in up to 0 to 4 inches…
