Normally, your hip measurement is taken at the widest part of your glutus maximus (butt), this is a crucial measurement for pants. In most cases, the same measurement is required for jackets. Always ensure that you’re standing up straight while someone else is taking the measurement, the measuring tape should be parallel to the floor.

In some cases, the “hip” measurement may require that you measure at the bottom of the jacket as in where the jacket hits your hips. This measurement is used especially when the jacket is shorter in length, it may not be as long as the widest part of your butt. The measurement should be done perpendicular to the base of the thumb or end of the thumb, depending on where your jacket length ended.

To measure hips on an existing jacket, simply measure the bottom of the jacket and double it.
